Man, atop 3 is almost impossible. I'll preface this list by saying I went out of my way to picks shows from at least 3 different eras, because I can't possibly get beyond a Top 3 for 1977 alone. So with that in mind, I'd say these will suffice for a Top 3 with the above-mentioned caveats.

1. 10/29/77

King of all shows. Reasons given in a review (and link to best existing source from Charlie Miller) here:

2. 8/27/72

I have grown to love this show more and more over the years. the playing is both fluid and full of energy. There's a Top 3 all-time Birdsong, maybe the greatest, jazz-jammiest "PITB" ever, and everything else is done to perfection as well. Listen to, for just one example, the laid-back "Deal" that nevertheless contains a fantastic Jerry jam in the middle. Great show to introduce skeptics or neophytes to the Dead.

3. 10/12/84

I wish there was a more pristine source, but the multiple AUDs available are all very good. This one gets a nod because the second set especially is to me what the Dead were all about in terms of "the journey"....a winding, exploratory, daring, spacey yet always interesting continuous flow of music that spills out into a gut-wrenching, soul-searing "Morning Dew" for the ages. The UJB>SPACE>PLAYIN IN THE SPACE>PLAYIN REPRISE>UJB REPRISE>DEW is a sequence that never ceases to astonish. And set one aint bad either.

I'm in agreement about the 8/27/72...and there's a SBD for it that's one of the best boards I've ever heard. Not only is the Bird Song one of the best ever, but so is the Casey Jones, of all things...
